Got them baht-in-freefall blues

Move over Bob Dylan, here comes Got Jakapun and his own brand of social comment, Thai style.

Those irrepressible Thais have come up with a new export to boost their current-account balance, and have a dig at the state of the economy at the same time.

Dylan may have been awarded three Grammys last month, but Khun Got and his record company Grammy Entertainment are hoping to persuade farangs (foreigners) to buy his latest disc featuring the song Sethakit Ha Sorng, "Economy divided in two".

With collapsed finance companies, an IMF bail-out package and a plummeting baht, the Land of Smiles has been feeling a bit glum in recent months, but Got has managed to make the track sound quite up-beat, according to the record company.

Grammy Entertainment says it wants fans to enjoy the ditty. The song tells the all-too-familiar tale of Thailand's economic freefall - the house and car were all paid for on the never-never, then you lose your job, the trappings of wealth are repossessed and you are back to a diet of rice...

Got is riding a revival of luk thung music which has been sweeping the country as people tighten the purse strings and go back to their roots.
