73 the percentage of retail investors who expect the FTSE 100 to end the year higher than its present level, according to a survey conducted by share-trading website ADVFN.

49 the percentage rise in European equity market volatility over the past month. Volatility in the US rose over the same period but by just 30%.

17 the percentage fall in the volume of trades on the London Stock Exchange in June from the May figure. Volumes fell 20% on Euronext and 22% on Deutsche Börse. In the US volumes fell just 2% on the New York Stock Exchange and 6% on Nasdaq.

10,080,000,000 the value in pounds of UK buy-outs in the second quarter of 2006. It is the first time the figure has breached the £10 billion ($18.2 billion) mark.

41 the number of equity capital market deals withdrawn globally in June, according to Dealogic. The figure is the highest since May 2000 when it reached 47. US issuers have pulled out of 39 deals so far this year. The biggest deal to get cancelled so far this year has been the IPO of Italian tyre maker Pirelli Tyre, which had been expected to raise up to $1 billion.
