Emerging market funds: Old friends

Emerging market funds: New skills for new markets

Everyone at SW has worked with another member of the team at some point; in some cases their friendships and working relationships go back decades. For example, David Hinman first worked with SW’s CFO, Robert Venable, when they were both fund managers at Pacific Investment Management Company (Pimco). Hinman worked for 10 years at Pimco, mostly in the US high-yield and global investment-grade markets. That was after leaving the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Hinman left Pimco to join Ares Management, based in Los Angeles. He worked at Pimco with the founders of Drake, the company he was working for most recently, and where he met Ray Zucaro.

Zucaro met Cuneo while working in Florida for South Africa’s Standard Bank Asset Management on traditional and alternative investment vehicles. After Standard Bank, Zucaro worked for an emerging market trading boutique called INTL Consilium, also in Florida, and in corporate bonds. He then joined Drake. Even at Drake, Zucaro used Cuneo as an outside consultant.

Venable was CIO at US investment adviser First American Capital Management after leaving Pimco. He also has experience in portfolio structuring, risk and compliance thanks to his most recent position as CFO and COO at Game 7 Entertainment, a firm that provides online fundraising services to youth groups, schools and charities.
