Jouhar finishes arduous Scally Rally… but gets lost on way to airport

Congratulations to my old mucker Kelvin Jouhar, head of FX trading at HBOS, and his daughter Vicki, who successfully finished this year’s Scally Rally.

Kelvin has entertained me for the past week with reports of his progress from London to Rimini in his clapped-out old banger. Despite a few scares, our intrepid duo managed to cross the finish line with just three minutes to spare, having covered 1,400 miles in four days in their 1983 Austin Metro.

Sadly, the car is no more. Kelvin had pre-arranged to leave it at a scrapyard near Bologna (Forli) airport, thinking that it was a convenient stop before flying home. Unfortunately, he got the wrong airport and after dropping off the car, he had to make a frantic dash in a taxi to Bologna (Main), which is a mere 100km away. He tells me there was no way the Metro would have made this final leg. British engineering at its best.
