Since the merger between the old UBS and the nimbler and better-managed Swiss Bank Corp in 1998, the new UBS has been able to claim leadership in Swiss banking against its old rival Credit Suisse. Under the leadership of Marcel Ospel, it now claims to have 4 million personal and corporate banking customers in Switzerland and its private-banking and asset management business has achieved huge scale, with over $1 trillion under management, making it a world leader. Although the bank had seemed to lose momentum last year in asset gathering, its most recent result show that inflows have resumed. Net new money for the whole group was more than SFr21 billion ($12 billion) in the first quarter of this year, the best quarterly result reported since the merger.
