Stars of the future: David Walker, Sberbank

David Walker has a record of brokering high-level deals in some of the world’s more idiosyncratic markets, notably Russia. His latest move promises to add no less interest.

The Oxford educated British citizen is one of a slew of senior hires to Russia’s Sberbank, following its acquisition of the independent Moscow-based investment bank Troika Dialog. He was recruited in October to spearhead Sberbank’s cross-border M&A business.

Much of his time so far has been spent assisting Sberbank’s own acquisition bids. He has been involved in Sberbank’s negotiations to buy Lukoil’s Zurich banking subsidiary SLB, for example: part of Sberbank’s desire to have a Swiss banking operation.

Walker joined from Citi, where he linked Kazakhstan and Ukraine coverage into the Moscow team, doing the same between African markets such as Kenya and Nigeria and Citi’s Johannesburg office.

He advised on Access Bank’s acquisition of Intercontinental this year, for example.
