FX news: Citi wants social media lawyer

Financial technology sight Finextra has published an articlerevealing that Citi “is looking to hire an attorney to provide legal oversight for its social media activities”.

Is that a warning that we have to be more careful when tweeting about Citi? Actually, it’s nothing of the sort. It’s just another instance of a corporation seeing business opportunities in social media sites originally meant for individuals.

I dunno. One minute it’s all fun and playful anarchy, then next minute the suits join in...

Finextra has the full brief, but in short, the job is about consistency of message and avoiding embarrassing errors. Such as earlier this year when Citi blocked the bank account of Fabulis (a social site for gay men) on the grounds of “objectionable” content on its blogs (Fabulis’s, not Citi’s).
