Subramanian’s brief moment of online passion

Pity Arvind Subramanian – he has a tough enough job as it is as chief economic adviser to the government of India without further distraction.

It was irksome, then, when someone hacked his Twitter account. One minute he was telling his 43,200 followers about the IMF/World Bank annual meetings, the next he appeared to be posting a picture of a nubile woman in a negligée under a tweet saying: “Looking for someone to share your dreams with? Let the passion into your life!”

Followed up with: “Is it difficult for you to find a right partner who will accept any of your crazy desires?”

Fortunately, the Twittersphere decided not to take this as a veiled criticism of Narendra Modi’s unwillingness to accept Subramanian’s wilder economic suggestions.

“I’m gonna go out on a limb here,” wrote one of his followers, “and suggest @arvindsubraman has been hacked."

Subramanian has since regained control of his account and returned to tweeting about unconditional convergence and middle-income traps.
