ETF Securities’ Commodities Trump Major Asset Classes

ETF Securities’ first-quarter 2008 results show that commodities took first as the top performing asset class

The DJ-AIG Commodities Index returned 9.6% during the first quarter and the ETFS All Commodities ETC returned 9.4%. This comes as equities became the worst performing asset class for the quarter and ETF Securities assets under management nearly doubled to USD5 billion.

The S&P500 index returned -9.9%, the DJ EuroStoxx50 returned -10.6% and the FTSE100 returned -11.5%, thereby implying that ETFS All Commodities ETC beat equities by about 20% and the ETFS Leveraged All Commodities DJ-AIGCISM ETC took in more than 17% during the same period.

Of the 37 commodities and baskets of commodities ETF Securities offers exposure to, ETFS Physical Platinum performed the best, gaining 33.3% over the quarter. Another eight types of ETCs returned at least 20%, including: ETFS copper, ETFS aluminium, ETFS corn and ETFS natural gas. There were some commodities that lost ground, such as ETFS livestock and ETFS lean hogs, which performed the worst.
