Asian-based hedge funds generated 30% of all reported commissions earned by brokers over the past 12 months on trades of Asian stocks, says a report by US research house Greenwich Associates. Although the average Asian hedge fund is still only one-third the size of traditional institutional investors in the region by assets, the higher level of trading of hedge funds is such that commission payments to brokerages are broadly the same.
