Asian investment banking’s dream team

HSBC
SCORE: 69
RANK: 8st
WEIGHTED SCORE: 95 (8th)

Management 8 points
HSBC has a stable management team in place in Asia under the leadership of banking and markets chief Anita Fung. Stuart Gulliver, who runs the global business, was largely responsible for building the team. Chosen team formation means coaching staff does lack a number of skill sets, however

DCM - STAR PLAYER 9 points
Always in the frame for the big G3 mandates, a leading player in high yield and a strong performer in local currency. Maybe needs to score more often in China onshore

ECM 5 points
Two years ago would have been lucky to score at all. But HSBC is finally starting to tick in equity capital markets, even if there is still a lot of work to be done. The Prudential/AIA underwriting shows the firm’s potential

M&A - WEAK LINK 1 points
HSBC says it doesn’t need to add this player to its starting 11 to be the leading force in Asian investment banking. But it leaves a big hole on the pitch

Australia 5 points
Scores highly for its abilities in debt; not wanting to sound like a broken record, but its business is of course lacking elsewhere

India 5 points
A credible player in India. Markets division makes plenty of money, but there’s little to be seen from its investment banking business

North Asia 8 points
Goes without saying that Hong Kong is the jewel in the crown. Top player in Korea debt as well.

Southeast Asia 4 points
Good client bases for markets division in Indonesia and Vietnam, but SE Asia is an equity and advisory-led market so it fails to compete where it matters most.

Japan 2 points
Hired a debt banker to try to score some luck strikes, and claims a commercial banking presence in Japan for over 140 years, but not an investment bank feared by the opposition

China 5 points
A name isn’t everything. China is largely an equity story for the moment and they have a lot of work to do there. Do not even have the fallback of traditional strength in DCM until they get an onshore licence.

Markets 8 points
HSBC’s treasury operations are the powerhouse of its business in Asia, literally a money-printing machine, but it could improve in some flow markets

Owner 9 points
The local investment banking business of probably the strongest bank in the world today – and one with a real Asian focus to boot. Everything is there for HSBC if it makes the right decisions

If HSBC was a premier league club it would be: EVERTON
An extremely well run club with some outstanding ability on the pitch. But owners refuse to splash the cash here, there and everywhere which makes it hard for the team to win trophies at the end of the season
