For Thabo Makoko, building a stronger transaction bank at Standard Bank has meant looking beyond the immediate economic cycle. Appointed group head of transaction banking in November 2025, after previously leading the business across African regions and international markets, Makoko has sought to align the franchise more closely around client activity while preparing it for longer-term changes in technology and African commerce.
“What I most wanted to change was how the business was organised to grow,” says Makoko.
