Middle East’s best digital bank for SMEs 2025: Wio Bank

Wio Bank is the leading digital bank for SMEs in the Middle East due to its innovation, speed and customer-centricity. As of the end of 2024, Wio Business has signed up over 90,000 SME customers – averaging more than 5,000 new accounts per month – with over 80% of them remaining active.

Two out of every five new businesses in the UAE now open their business accounts with Wio, outpacing all traditional and digital competitors.

Wio’s success in 2024 has come from its ability to eliminate long-standing pain points for SMEs. Where traditional banks often take weeks to open an account, Wio enables new businesses to apply in under 10 minutes and receive full account functionality within an average of just two days. This efficiency is even more impressive given the fragmented nature of the UAE’s business licensing ecosystem. To this point, Wio has integrated with over 20 licensing authorities and implemented advanced KYC and fraud management systems.

Wio Business offers a fully digital, end-to-end platform tailored to entrepreneurs’ needs. From multi-user access and multicurrency accounts to debit and credit cards, POS payment integrations, and fixed-term savings options, Wio acts as a true operating system for businesses. In 2024, it became the largest issuer of Visa business cards in the UAE and expanded its offering to include high-yield savings spaces and powerful automation tools.

Wio Bank’s success is underpinned by a forward-looking, cloud-native microservices architecture

The biggest development for the bank has been in SME credit enablement. Recognising SMEs’ financing challenges, Wio built a comprehensive lending suite in 2024. The bank introduced short-term credit products like Quick Cash and SME credit cards, alongside receivables-backed POS financing and an enhanced supply chain finance offering. Within six months of launch, Wio’s credit asset book grew fivefold, reaching Dh250 million ($68 million), equivalent to nearly 30% of its total book.

Beyond banking, Wio focused on enriching the broader business ecosystem in 2024. The bank partnered with a host of government entities, fintechs and licensing authorities to create an integrated platform that supports everything from compliance to cashflow management. These alliances have positioned Wio as a business enabler and growth partner in the region.

Wio Bank’s success is underpinned by a forward-looking, cloud-native microservices architecture, allowing rapid product development and scalability. In 2024 alone, Wio launched over 50 new features, many of which were directly informed by customer feedback.

By focusing on accessibility, transparency and value creation, Wio Bank has fundamentally transformed how SMEs in the Middle East manage their finances.
