IMF responds to Nielsen accusations

Regarding Euromoney's March 2006 cover story: “Inside Argentina’s financial crisis” written by Guillermo Nielsen, Argentina’s former finance secretary.

Sir,

Guillermo Nielsen is, of course, entitled to his view of the relationship between Argentina and the IMF (“Inside Argentina’s financial crisis”, March 2006). Our perspectives on the events of recent years have been discussed at great length in a series of public documents, all of which are available on the IMF website (www.imf.org).

That said, Mr Nielsen’s accusations about leaks and unethical behavior by Fund staff cannot stand without response. He and his former colleagues at the Argentine finance ministry have made similar allegations in the past. The charges have been thoroughly investigated at the Fund and found to be untrue and utterly without merit. Mr Nielsen is well aware of those findings, so it is unfortunate that he has chosen to repeat them.
