Africa's rising stars: Ayanda Sisulu-Dunstan, co-head of debt capital markets at Rand Merchant Bank

Nationality: South African

Ayanda Sisulu-Dunstan has more than 13 years of investment-banking experience in Africa, and from her base in South Africa she has watched capital markets on the continent grow from strength to strength.

Starting her career as a private equity analyst at investment holding company Brait in Johannesburg, Sisulu-Dunstan moved her way up the ranks before joining Rand Merchant Bank as business development director in 2006.

In 2009, Sisulu-Dunstan was promoted to co-head of the debt capital markets (DCMs) team at Rand and has since focused primarily on deals financing African sovereigns and parastatals.

She has pan-African experience in DCM, and has worked on transactions in Zambia, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria and Ghana.

In 2012, Sisulu-Dunstan and her team acted as joint lead arranger and bookrunner with First National Bank of Namibia for the inaugural issuance by Namibia in the South African DCMs – the first listing of sovereign bonds into another sovereign’s DCM – allowing Namibia to diversify funding sources and create a benchmark for others to follow.

Under Sisulu-Dunstan's leadership, Rand has been recognized as having the best debt origination team at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Spire Awards for three years in a row.
