Awards for Excellence national winners 2026: Spain’s best bank – CaixaBank

Despite its dominance of the Spanish banking market, CaixaBank has continued to grow – and grow its profitability alongside it. Return on tangible equity reached 17.5% in 2025, allowing it to increase its 2027 target to 20%.

In the first year of its three-year plan, it beat all its volume targets set out in late 2024 across loans, customer funding and insurance.

“In 2025, we executed strongly on the strategy we outlined in November 2024,” says Gonzalo Gortázar, CEO. “While there was some initial scepticism around our growth plans, an increasing number of investors now recognise CaixaBank as a high-quality compounder. With a ~20% return on tangible equity, we believe it’s more value accretive to reinvest our capital generation into profitable organic growth rather than distribute it in full.”

Most importantly, the bank is winning more clients, even in Spain. Its customer base already numbers 18.5 million in a population of around 50 million. But it increased its customer numbers by 390,000 in Spain in 2025, on net basis.

Beyond retail, the bank saw some of its strongest market-share gains in 2025 in SME banking in Spain. Private banking assets under management are also growing in double digits, surpassing €200 billion in mid-2025. Corporate and investment banking is another growing contributor to the bank’s fee income.

On its advantages versus fintech players, CaixaBank clearly understands the value of agility and technology investment, including an accelerated cloud migration. It has moved to embed its mortgages and consumer lending more deeply into its own home and mobility ecosystems, including the launch in May 2025 of a proprietary real estate portal with more than 60,000 homes for sale, after launching its own online platform for used cars in 2024.

A redesign of the app last year further simplified its digital journeys, boosting digital sales. Most importantly – as in other launches, such as a new cashback feature last year – it is responding to what customers want.

“We try to bring a scientific method,” says Mariona Vicens, head of digital transformation and advanced analytics. “Every decision starts with customer research and data.  If we hadn’t seen such a strong response from customers in the cashback programme, we would have kept it in the home app and we would not have developed our digital rewards in the same way. If it’s not working, we take it out.”
