AwardSpeak: Winning ways with language?

As part of the decision-making process for the Awards for Excellence, Euromoney journalists conduct numerous interviews with senior bankers who aim to convince us why they should win.

Unfortunately, they do not limit their tactics to discussing industry trends and the merits of their most impressive deals but also deploy a variety of linguistic tactics to deceive, obfuscate, inveigle and bamboozle.

In order to make sense of what they are saying we have pooled our experience to create a dictionary of AwardSpeak.

“We’ve been very selective” = We’ve not been able to do many deals

“We’re number one in the league tables” = Here is some data we’ve manipulated

“We have absolutely been a leader in = We have done at least one deal of this kind

“We have made a lot of progress in” = We are slightly less bad at — than we were before

“Oh wait, I have something for you” = I’m trying to bribe you

“We have a dominant market position” = We’re in the top five in the league tables

“We have the leading franchise in” = We have a...
