LDI Debate: Bridging the void


Serkan Bektas (SB) is managing director and head of the UK pension solutions team at Barclays Capital. He focuses on delivery of liability-driven investing, risk mitigation and structured products solutions to defined-benefit pension schemes.
David Blackwood (DB) is group treasurer of ICI. A chartered accountant, he has worked as divisional CFO, group financial controller and group treasurer for ICI. Alongside treasury he is also currently project director for the group’s finance function excellence project.
Richard Boardman (RB) is head of pensions strategy at UBS Investment Bank. His main focus is bespoke analyses of, and solutions to, pension funding issues. Before joining UBS in 2005, Richard was a member of the influential investment strategy team at consultants Watson Wyatt, constructing liability-driven solutions for pensions clients.
Andrew Capon (AC) is editor-in-chief at State Street Global Markets, the investment research and trading arm of State Street Corporation. He contributes a monthly column to Euromoney. Previously he was senior editor of Institutional Investor, where he won numerous awards for journalism, covering fund management, hedge funds, insurance and pension funds.
Chris Hatry (CHy) is head of structured products, Legal & General Investment Management. Chris qualified as an actuary after taking a PhD in theoretical physics. He has had wide experience in Legal & General, including the roles of strategy director and international director.
Chris Hitchen (CH) is chief executive of the Railways Pension Trustee Company, which runs the industry-wide pension arrangement for the UK’s railways. He oversees relationships with more than 30 external fund management firms that manage £15 billion of assets. He is chairman of the National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF) investment council and a member of the NAPF board.
Mary Kerrigan (MK) is a senior investment consultant in Watson Wyatt’s Reigate office. She has more than 15 years’ experience in pensions and investments. She specializes in providing advice on strategic investment issues to defined-benefit pension schemes.
David Knee (DK) is head of institutional portfolio management at Prudential M&G. M&G manages assets in excess of £65 billion of fixed income, of which more than two-thirds is liability-matched.
Dawid Konotey-Ahulu (DKA) is head of the insurance and pensions solutions group, Europe, at Merrill Lynch. In 2003 he implemented the first full holistic real yield hedge within a defined-benefit pension scheme and has since been involved in several similar transactions, working with a wide range of sponsors across the UK and continental Europe
Joe Moody (JM) is head of liability-driven investment and a principal at State Street Global Advisers. He is responsible for overseeing the management and development of investment strategies for institutional investors. He was previously a senior investment manager for 10 years.
Euan Munro (EM) is head of strategic solutions for Standard Life Investments. Euan is responsible for the management of institutional funds for clients with a broad variety of liability objectives. The team’s objective is to grow the funds faster than liabilities in a risk-controlled environment.
Alan Stewart (AS) is group finance director of WH Smith plc. Formerly he was chief executive of Thomas Cook UK Ltd before which he spent 10 years as an investment banker. He is a non-executive director of Games Workshop Group plc and is also a trustee of national children’s charity KidsOut.
