Middle East’s best bank transformation 2025: Kuwait Finance House

Kuwait Finance House (KFH) takes the title of Middle East’s best bank transformation, after the successful acquisition and full operational integration of Ahli United Bank (AUB).

The transformative milestone marks a bold and complex strategic pivot. It not only created the largest banking merger in Kuwait’s history but also redefined KFH’s positioning as a global Islamic banking powerhouse.

The transformation was not purely structural. What sets KFH apart is the scale and speed at which it reoriented the acquired institutions around a unified Shariah-compliant banking model.

In record time, AUB entities in Bahrain, the UK and Egypt were converted to Islamic financial institutions, aligning with KFH’s longstanding identity while navigating multi-jurisdictional regulatory and operational challenges. This monumental effort expanded KFH’s global footprint to 12 countries and a branch network of 615, making it one of the world’s largest Islamic banking groups by geographic reach.

The conversion was underpinned by a coordinated strategy involving systems migration, customer onboarding, product realignment and unified risk and governance structures. A dedicated command centre was established to oversee continuity and mitigate risk, while KFH’s human resources and transformation teams played a crucial role in integrating AUB staff and streamlining security, payroll and administrative systems across the newly consolidated network.

A standout achievement was the continued evolution of Tam, Kuwait’s only fully Shariah-compliant digital bank

The transformation yielded clear financial and strategic benefits. KFH now ranks among the largest banks in the Middle East by market capitalisation and is pursuing a long-term vision of joining the world’s top 100 banks. Its newly enlarged geographic spread across the GCC, Europe and Asia enhances its competitiveness and resilience across economic cycles.

At the same time, KFH reported strong growth in key product segments, including a 13% increase in personal finance portfolio size and a 25% rise in personal finance deal volume year-on-year.

The bank’s transformation journey extended into the digital realm. KFH launched numerous digital enhancements and platforms to unify and streamline service delivery. It rolled out instant credit and prepaid card issuance, expanded self-service capabilities and launched direct account opening via D-POS devices. Robotic process automation, advanced analytics and artificial intelligence were embedded in risk and operations, improving efficiency and inventory management.

A standout achievement was the continued evolution of Tam, Kuwait’s only fully Shariah-compliant digital bank. Tam now offers end-to-end digital onboarding, cardless payments, peer-to-peer transfers and an integrated reward and cashback platform with gamified user experiences. These enhancements have driven rapid customer acquisition and positioned KFH as a leader in Islamic digital banking innovation.

By executing one of the region’s most complex bank integrations while simultaneously accelerating digital and customer-centric innovations, KFH has demonstrated not just the ability to transform, but to lead. Its successful blend of M&A-driven expansion, Islamic conversion and digital strategy exemplifies the best of modern Islamic banking.
