Europe's best sectoral teams

Questionnaires were sent to 290 managers of European equity portfolios in Europe and North America.

The fund managers were asked to name their three favourite brokers in each category. Four points were then awarded for a firstt-place nomination, three for a second and two for a third. The totals for each broker have been expressed as a percentage of the total points awarded for that category. These percentages are not meant to represent market share.

Sector positions are based on the total response for each firm, not individual analysts, because many fund managers simply voted for a team or a firm. The sector analysts in the tables are the individuals at that firm who received the most points from fund managers. Where an analyst changed firm during or after the survey, the points have been awarded to the analyst's old firm.

The overall results are not a compilation of the results in the individual categories, but responses to separate questions.

The survey was conducted in July and August 1997 by Peter Loveless.
