Africa’s rising stars: Vuyo Jack, co-founder and executive chairman of Empowerdex

Nationality: South African

Vuyo Jack makes Euromoney’s list of rising stars because of his dedication to redressing inequalities in South Africa.

Jack co-founded Empowerdex, an independent rating and research agency, in 2001 to provide support to the public sector and private businesses in South Africa, in keeping with the government's black economic empowerment (BEE).

Under Jack, Empowerdex remains the market leader in BEE verification, having rated more than 6,000 companies while advising them on the sustainable application of BEE. In March 2003, Jack was appointed to South Africa’s BEE task team to advise the minister of trade and industry on BEE legislation and guidelines, and in 2008 he set up think tank Africa Empowered, to facilitate interaction between companies at the regional and the grass-root level. His inclusion in Africa's rising stars has high-profile backing.

“Vuyo is a down to earth, unassuming and amazing individual,” says Ashish Thakkar, founder and managing director of Mara Group, which is active in more than 19 African countries, with interests ranging from real estate to finance.

"His heart is in the right place. He is not only extremely successful but he is also very impact-minded. He wants to make a difference.”
