People moves: HSBC makes senior Middle East hire

UK bank appoints new head of global banking and markets, MENA

Mohammad Al Tuwaijri

The flurry of activity at HSBC continues apace with the bank appointing a new head of global banking and markets for the Middle East and North Africa region.

Mohammad Al Tuwaijri joins the bank from JP Morgan, where he was most recently managing director and head of Saudi Arabia. Prior to that, he spent 12 years as treasurer of Saudi Arabia British Bank, HSBC’s joint venture partner in the Kingdom.

Al Tuwaijri, who will be based in Dubai, will report to Simon Cooper, chief executive of HSBC MENA, and to Samir Assaf and Robin Phillips, heads of global markets and global banking respectively in London.

“Mohammad’s prime focus will be on the implementation of the business strategy for global banking and markets in the MENA region,” says Cooper. “While 2009 was a difficult time for the region there are signs that is starting to emerge from the downturn.”

Al Tuwaijri fills a hole left by Mukhtar Hussain, former head of HSBC’s global banking and markets business for the Middle East and North Africa. Hussain moved to Kuala Lumpur at the end of 2009 to become chief executive of HSBC Bank Malaysia.
