Financial institutions funding debate: Bank funding faces up to the credit crunch

Nick Morgan (NM) is managing director and head of financial institutions, Europe and the Middle East, at RBC Capital Markets, having joined the firm in May 2007. He is the senior coverage banker for European financial institutions responsible for capital markets origination.

Luke Davidson (LD) is head of group funding at ANZ and is responsible for managing the bank’s A$92 billion term wholesale debt portfolio, incorporating senior and subordinated debt issuance in all major global capital markets across a range of currencies and products. He has worked in ANZ’s treasury since 1998, having previously held roles in balance sheet management, non-traded interest rate risk management and short-term wholesale funding.

Helge Stray (HS) is senior vice-president at DnB NOR Bank and is responsible for the long-term funding of the DnB NOR Group. He has held this position since the formation of DnB NOR in 2004. Before this, he was responsible for the long-term funding of UBN, one of the two banks that merged to establish DnB NOR.

Chris Bannister (CB) is head of global funding and capital management at Westpac Banking Corporation. He worked in a number of financial markets roles in the London branch of Westpac before joining group treasury in Sydney in 2001 as head of global funding. He has responsibility for long-term and short-term funding, securitization and liquidity management across the Westpac group. Since 2005 he has also had responsibility for capital execution. 

Frank Van Gansbeke (FVG) has been global head of funding and liquidity at Fortis since March 2005, responsible for group-wide capital markets funding and liquidity management. He previously rejoined the Fortis CFO office in Brussels in 2002, where he was responsible for its principal capital markets activity. In that capacity, he was closely involved in the Assurant NYSE IPO in 2004. He was US corporate treasurer for Assurant (then Fortis) from 1998 to 2002.

Rahul Gupta (RG) is senior managing executive officer and chief financial officer of Shinsei Bank, Japan. He has more than 25 years’ experience in leading financial institutions across Asia. Before joining Shinsei, he was managing director and group financial controller of DBS Bank, Singapore. He also served as director and chief controller, Asia, at Deutsche Bank’s Asia Pacific head office in Singapore.
