This survey covered the following countries:
Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates.

Total capital was defined as tier one capital plus tier two (supplementary capital) where applicable.
Total assets are given as reported in banks' financial statements net of contra accounts.
Net profit is stated net of tax and before dividend distribution or allocation to reserves.
The survey excludes state corporations and development banks (including Islamic Development Bank), responsible for the general promotion of the country's economic growth.

** Figures are based on the 01/12/96 consolidated balance sheet (and the combined 12/95 net profits) of Jordan National Bank and Business Bank.
