BBVA won the award for the best bank in the region, and its freshly rebranded subsidiaries in Argentina and Mexico also took the best bank awards in those jurisdictions.

In the last year, the Spanish-headquartered bank’s efforts to leverage its global digital investment clearly paid off – with the region an increasingly important source of revenues and profits.

BBVA also took the award for the best bank in Latin America for sustainable financing.

“The bank’s ability to deploy its new digital platforms across the region has been a leading source of profitability and efficiency,” the magazine observed.

JPMorgan won the best investment bank for the region, due to combined breadth of the bank’s franchise across the region and the depth of its excellence across the spectrum of investment banking products and services.

“In a highly competitive year, the US bank claims the award because of the unrivalled breadth of its mandates across investment banking products, as well as its dominance in many of the region’s countries,” Euromoney noted.

It was challenged by Goldman Sachs’ impressive growth in the region – the latter took the award for the best bank for financing.

Meanwhile BR Partners, a Brazilian boutique investment bank took the award for best advisory as it continues its impressive growth story, both inside its domestic market and increasingly elsewhere in Latin America.

Another purely regional story was Vision Banco’s award for best bank in Latin America for corporate responsibility.

Other notable awards were won by Credit Suisse (best wealth management), Banco Inter (best digital bank), Bank of America (best for transaction services) and Santander (best for SMEs).

Meanwhile Scotiabank Chile won a brace of awards this year, with its acquisition and integration of BBVA’s operations in Chile the basis for the award for the best bank transformation in the region, as well as being awarded the best bank in Chile.

About the Awards for Excellence

Euromoney's Awards for Excellence are the awards that matter to the banks and bankers who matter. They were established in 1992 and were the first of their kind in the global banking industry. This year Euromoney received almost 1,000 submissions from banks in our regional and country awards programme that covers more than 50 regional awards and best bank awards in close to 100 countries. We will be receiving submissions and announcing winners in a further 25 global award categories in our September issue.
