Since the merger between the old UBS and the nimbler and better-managed Swiss Bank Corp in 1998, the new UBS has been able to claim leadership in Swiss banking against its old rival Credit Suisse. Under the leadership of Marcel Ospel, it now claims to have 4 million personal and corporate banking customers in Switzerland and its private-banking and asset management business has achieved huge scale, with over $1 trillion under management, making it a world leader.
