When Clare Marshall stepped down as treasurer of the Export Development Corporation last month, the world of borrowing lost one of its more innovative and colourful characters. A bluff, good-humoured bear of a man, he is someone for whom the expression “larger than life” might have been invented.
Marshall’s stamina is legendary. A veteran of 10 marathons (best time 3 hours 23 minutes), he was renowned for running to work – seven miles along the Rideau canal between his home and EDC’s office in central Ottawa.
