Methodology

The rankings were compiled in conjunction with UK rating agency IBCA Limited. All information was supplied by IBCA from banks’ consolidated annual reports for the years 1996 and 1997 (1995 figures were used for a number of banks in Australasia and the Indian sub-continent).

All institutions with Asian headquarters whose primary business is taking deposits are eligible for inclusion.
