International cash management review 2010: Global network banks

These are tough times for global network banks, with most major companies now relying on regional or multi-regional rather than global solutions, though their overall revenues from cash management and trade still managed to grow in 2009, fairly spectacularly for some.

Euromoney’s 2010 survey of global network banks covers seven banks: Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citi, Deutsche Bank, HSBC,

J.P. Morgan, RBS and Standard Chartered Bank. The survey results given in Table 1 show: (click here to see Table 1: Global Network Banks 2010

  • only five of the banks, Citi, Deutsche, HSBC, RBS and Standard Chartered, have their own bank branches in all five regions

  • Citi has by far the largest own branch network, with branches in 91 countries, way ahead of its closest rival HSBC with branches in 65

  • Citi also has the largest own branch and partner bank combined network covering 118 countries, its closest rival Standard Chartered Bank has 96 followed by HSBC with 76

  • Citi has the greatest access to paper clearing and same day clearing systems with Standard Chartered Bank a close second

  • Citi also has the greatest access to ACHs

  • All the other banks have far less coverage of paper clearing, same day clearing systems and ACHs than Citi

  • HSBC has the lead in payment cards, issuing in 57 countries, its closest rival Deutsche Bank issuing in 42 and Citi in 41

  • HSBC also leads in payment card transaction acquiring in 63 countries, with JP Morgan a close second in 62 and Citi in 59.
