Santander - SCH and Banesto
BEST DEBT HOUSE
BEST EQUITY HOUSE
BEST M&A HOUSE
Although BBVA continues to perform impressively at home and abroad it remains in the shadow of its larger rival Santander, which is again Euromoney's choice for best bank in Spain.
At home, Santander - through its Santander Central Hispano and Banesto branch networks - has succeeded in maintaining its leadership position across all business lines. Its retail business has benefited from successful cross-selling of products from the group's strong asset management and private banking divisions.
Santander has also made progress in investment banking. It leads the league tables in syndicated loans and project finance and this year also wins the best equity house award.
Santander worked on the biggest ECM deals over the past 12 months, including the €750 million IPO of broadcaster Telecinco and the €1.54 billion IPO of motorways operator Cintra. It also advised on a €1.3 billion capital increase for domestic rival Banco Sabadell's acquisition of Banco Atlantico and on a €1.2 billion capital increase for Arcelor. Over the past year, Santander has moved up the ranks to become the leading research house for Spanish stocks and has one of the leading sales and trading businesses.
