The view from Jersey City

Lehman Brothers escaped across the river, its emergency relocation plan kicking in within minutes of the tragedy. Merrill did not fare quite as well.

Most of the blinds on the eastern-facing windows remain closed. It’s a view the traders on Lehman Brothers’ makeshift debt and equity floors don’t want to contemplate. They’re in the tallest building on Exchange Square in Jersey City, just across the Hudson river from where they used to work. That building – 3 World Financial Centre – lies empty, with a prominent gash on one corner where debris from the stricken World Trade Centre landed.
