Chelsea adopt a Diamond formation

frontend-01.gif

Bob Diamond is on the verge of a sporting hat trick. The Barclays Capital CEO's run of success started last October when the Boston Red Sox beat the infamous Curse of the Bambino to win baseball's World Series. They had last won in 1918.

Another of Diamond's favourite sports teams, the New England Patriots, enjoyed a more routine triumph in February when they beat Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 to win their third Super Bowl in four years.

Diamond should be celebrating again soon. By the time you read this, Chelsea Football Club could be within days of winning the English Premier League for the first time in 50 years. With the outspoken Jose Mourinho in charge, Chelsea could clinch the title by beating London rivals Arsenal on April 20.

That's not all. Having knocked out Barcelona, they now play Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the European Champions League.

Under their charismatic coach, Chelsea have spent big money hiring in some of the most sought-after players in Europe. The same might be said of BarCap, of course, although whether the bank will achieve the same level of success remains to be seen.
