With a dominant position in almost every area of German finance, it would be difficult to recognize any bank other than Deutsche Bank as the best in the country. Throughout Europe, it competes with national champions for every mandate. In Germany, it is the national champion.

Domestically, the bank has cut its loan exposure, improved costs and boosted its private-client business.

But that does not mean its competitors are withering away. DrKW is a very active lender and maintains a clear lead in Pfandbriefe. Commerzbank is enjoying a revival of its securities business and building on its healthy position in retail banking.

In debt capital markets, issuers are spoiled, with a choice of top-quality banks. Citigroup is the leading non-German bank in bonds and indeed is the biggest in loans according to Dealogic data. Barclays Capital has become an integral part of the market, trusted by some of the country?s issuers.

But for local issuers looking for international exposure, the clear choice is Deutsche Bank.
