Mr Mystic and the skating lawyers

The City of London took to fancy dress on ice recently to raise funds for Sense, the charity working with deafblind people. On the eve of Halloween, bankers, lawyers, and accountants competed in speed-skating round the Broadgate rink and - even more keenly - for best costume prize. Assorted vampires, skeletons and ghosts helped to raise over £30,000.

The lawyers did scarily well. Linklaters and Alliance won the coveted fancy dress prize, while Slaughter and May picked up the champagne for being fastest.

But none would have been celebrating, if they had listened to the gloomy predictions being provided by some of Britain's most respected mystics who also attended at the invitation of event sponsor Mystic Challenge, the sixth-sense game show on UK cable TV channel, Living. "The euro will dive," one confided, predicting a global Financial crisis. What, even further? "Yes, even further and there is nothing the central bankers can do about it." And that's not what he thinks, he assured us, the spirits told him.
