Macau’s impressive airport symbolizes its ambition to thrive as the gateway to China. But with China opening up, and the prospect of closer ties to Taipei removing the need for Taiwanese businessmen to stop off in Macau en route to China, it may find its role diminishing. That increases the urgency of developing more diverse local businesses than visitor-oriented ones. Chris Cockerill reports

This December 20 marks the first anniversary of Macau’s hand over to China. The region has enjoyed a calm transition. But living in the shadow of its big brother, Hong Kong, and unable fully to shake off the hangover left by the 1997 financial crisis and the earlier construction boom and bust, Macau is looking for ways to kick-start its grumbling economy.

Befitting a market that depends heavily on high-spending visitors, it boasts impressive communications and infrastructure – but where, ultimately, do these lead?

Macau proclaims that it welcomes visitors with open arms. But, infamous for its casinos and prostitution, it has struggled to diversify the local economy, and to attract foreign direct investment in more conventional businesses.
