Euromoney's survey shows that Hong Kong's Mandarin Oriental is still the world's favourite hotel, after five years at the top. The Shangri-La group has made progress as top hotel chain and boasts four of Asia's most popular hotels. The traditional battle in Tokyo between the Okura and Imperial sees the Imperial reclaim pole position for the first time since 1994.

Cathay Pacific improves in our airline section and heads four specific route categories, but overall British Airways is still our respondents' preferred airline. Lufthansa emerged top for journeys originating in Frankfurt ­ although respondents rated it the worst airline as far as service is concerned. A spokesman for Lufthansa was unable to explain this, claiming that the airline had seen a rise in passengers in the past year with no drop in standards.

Euromoney polled assistants and in-house travel agents about their bosses' business trips over the past year. They were asked to nominate the top three hotels in individual cities and their favourite airlines on specific routes.
