Cheers: Nylons, sauce, shadows and smells

Uproar among Nylons; Banker complains about a woman — in his bed; One investment bank's efforts described as: “A shadow of its former shadow”; Riddle of the week: Can you run a syndicate department without being present at the event?; Congratulations to the new global head of syndicate in Merrill Lynch’s FICC division.

Nylons on... lifestyle journalist causes uproar among the Nylon investment-banker set

...and off! it’s rare you hear an investment banker complaining about a woman in his bed. . .

Shadows It’s not long ago one competitor described Credit Suisse’s investment banking effort in the US to a colleague as: “A shadow of its former shadow”.

Smell Riddle of the week: can you run a syndicate department without being present at the event . . ?

Cheers Congratulations to straight-talking Paul Richard

“I found your last column regarding those who leave the City smug and self-serving,” a friend reproached. “The sub-text was: ‘Look at me, I left. I’m doing something different now’.” He may have a point. But when I read about Amelia Fawcett, resigning as chief operating officer of Morgan Stanley International, I thought I had a point. Amelia was frequently dubbed one of the top women in finance, so it is intriguing that she is giving up management responsibility to become a senior adviser.

And why do investment banks love the vacuous title ‘senior adviser’? It’s right up there with vice-chairman.
