Euromoney sketches the new face of South African retail banking and takes a look back at the Barclays-Absa courtship.

In late-December 2012, Absa Group and Barclays announced they planned to combine most of their Africa operations in a transaction tipped to create South Africa's largest retail bank. The deal reshaped the South African banking landscape and revealed Barclays' emerging market-related strategic ambitions under its new chief executive Antony Jenkins, who replaced Bob Diamond.
