Smile bright like a Diamond

At the Chelsea Flower Show in London last month, the floral displays were not the only brilliant thing catching the attention of throngs of visitors.

Among captains of industry, senior bankers and assorted old duffers that rocked up for the opening night was none other than the most unpopular banker ever to turn a sleepy UK high street bank into a global powerhouse. Bob Diamond was doing the rounds, mixing with such other luminaries as Sir Win Bischoff, Peter Sands, his old friend Hector Sants and Formula One great Jackie Stewart.

Diamond, as you might expect, appeared far more relaxed than he did while he was being forced out of a job by the authorities ably assisted by the 'great' British tabloids. And when he smiled, he lit up the darkest corners of the great pavilion, having seemingly used his time off to discover a dental treatment known only to him and Tom Cruise. One senior banker claimed it was no surprise to see Diamond's pearly whites glinting, saying that in order to achieve such mega wattage in the smile area, you needed money, time and vanity, all of which he had in spades. Ouch, we say, the tooth hurts.
