Market split on chances for interest rate hike.

Market split on chances for interest rate hike. The analysts polled by MTI-Econews were split over the chances for an interest rate hike and the extent of the tightening by the central bank today. Seven out of ten polled experts said the bank could raise rates at its monetary council meeting today, or at the next one in May, while three analysts said they expected the rates to be put on hold. Those who expect a hike were divided on the extent of the tightening, and some found the chances of a 25bps and a 50bps hike similar. The factors in favour of a rate hike are the unfavourable February wage data (wage growth accelerated) while the strengthening forint and better-than-expected March inflation data are said to be justifying a dovish stance. As recalled, the central bank last hiked the base interest rate in late March by 50bps to 8.00%.
