Equity market round up: The month in numbers




283,200,000,000 the volume of share buyback programmes globally so far this year. Share buybacks are up 19% compared with 2006 year-to-date and are at their highest on record, according to Dealogic. Retail has been the most active sector, with $56.7 billion via 14 deals, up from $3.4 billion via 12 deals in 2006 year-to-date. Finance follows with a volume of $45.9 billion via 27 deals and insurance with $25.9 billion via 16 deals.

18,500,000,000 the volume of EMEA equity capital markets privatizations in 2007. The volume of privatizations from EMEA governments is up 244% over the same period last year. Follow-ons account for 79% of the total ECM volume raised via privatizations in 2007 ($14.6 billion raised via eight deals), up from 29% in 2006 year-to-date ($1.6bn raised via four deals).

33,700,000,000 the volume of eastern Europe ECM issuance. The amount raised so far in 2007 already exceeds the volume raised in the whole of 2006 ($31.6 billion via 124 deals). Credit Suisse leads eastern Europe ECM volume rankings in 2007 with a 13% share and Deutsche Bank leads the revenue rankings with 15% market share.

It is the highest year-to-date ECM volume on record. Australia’s ECM volume accounts for 20% of total Asia Pacific ECM volume in 2007, up nine percentage points compared with 2006 year-to-date.
