Lord Rothermere

Euromoney lost a great mentor and friend on September 1. Vere Harmsworth, the third Viscount Rothermere, died unexpectedly at 73.

He was chairman of Daily Mail and General Trust, owner of 72% of Euromoney Publications PLC, and joint president and a director of Euromoney. His father Esmond, together with Sir Patrick Sergeant founded Euromoney and the eponymous company in 1969 reaching agreement for the launch of this journal on the by-now-famous bench in Central Park on a business trip to New York.

Obituaries in the press around the world correctly hailed Vere as an inspired and loyal newspaper proprietor. Few of them reported what a wonderful inspiration and supporter of Euromoney he was; his role at Euromoney conferences from Budapest to Beijing; his support for the flotation of Euromoney as a public listed company in 1986; and his backing for the acquisition of Institutional Investor Inc. just over a year ago. We have lost a friend who inspired us to love what we do, to pursue editorial excellence, and to serve our markets with the same devotion that he showed his newspapers. Padraic Fallon
