Poll of polls 1995: On top of the world

Which were the world's most successful investment banks last year? Euromoney's unique poll of polls has the answers. The winners: Merrill and SBC Warburg. And a wooden spoon for Goldman Sachs, which slips from first to fourth. By Charles Piggott.

Euromoney's poll of polls proves it: 1995 was the year of the universal bank. The winners in this year's poll - based on a compilation of 70 Euromoney polls and league tables produced during 1995 - werethe banks which merged during the year. The repackaged Merrill Lynch and Smith New Court, Swiss Bank and SG Warburg, and Dresdner Bank and Kleinwort Benson all feature prominently in the ranking.

Merrill Lynch ranks top in the poll after its acquisition of UK brokeragehouse Smith New Court. Merrill has finally made it to the top after two years in second place behind Goldman Sachs. Smith New Court's main contribution to Merrill Lynch's overall score was in equity and economic research, and equity trading.

SBC Warburg comes a close second, following the acquisition by Swiss BankCorporation of SG Warburg. While both SG Warburg and SBC are strong in underwriting (last year SG Warburg ranked seventh in underwriting and SBC eighth) they are less evenly balanced in trading and advisory work. Last year SG Warburg failed to rank in the trading category, while SBC came third. Conversely, SBC failed to rank in the advisory category where SG Warburg ranked third.

The combination of Dresdner and Kleinwort Benson enters the top 20 for the first time. Dresdner on its own scored 73.14, Kleinwort Benson 71.2. The results suggest that the combined Dresdner Kleinwort Benson will be strongerin the primary markets than in the secondary markets, and that Kleinwort Benson will take the leading role in research and advisory work.

UK banks BZW and the HSBC Group rise in the ranking. BZW climbs from 12thto seventh on the strength of gains made in Eurobond syndication and fee-basedadvisory work, while HSBC's investment banking subsidiaries, HSBC Markets,Montagu, Capel and Trinkaus, are beginning to look less fragmented as thegroup moves up from 15th to 10th.

But not all restructurings have had an immediate impact. Efforts by DeutscheBank and Credit Suisse to improve their investment banking subsidiarieshave yet to contribute to their positions in the ranking. CS First Bostonfalls from sixth to ninth overall. Deutsche Morgan Grenfell falls from eighth to 12th following a less successful year in underwriting. But its scoreimproved in other areas: it moved up two places to ninth in trading, andentered the top 20 in the advisory category for the first time.

The big losers in the poll are Lehman Brothers and Goldman Sachs. Lehman falls from fourth to eighth in the overall table and from sixth to 17th in the advisory table. Goldman Sachs, which ranked number one in 1993 and1994, falls to fourth. Staff cuts and defections, which followed mistakes made in the bond market in the spring of 1994, have damaged Goldman's previously high reputation for research and underwriting. Goldman Sachs slips fromfirst to third in trading, second to fourth in underwriting and first tofourth in the advisory category.

Chemical Bank comes just outside the top 20 in 21st place with a score of80.57. Once the merger with Chase Manhattan is completed this spring, the combined bank should make it comfortably into the top 20. A combined score in the present ranking would have placed the merged bank 13th. Other banks just below the top 20 are: Bank of America (total score: 62.44), SociétéGénérale (62.17), PaineWebber (59.32), ING Barings (54.75),Hambros (54.67), Standard Chartered (50.13), Nikko Securities (47.79), Caissedes Dépôts et Consignations (43.39) and CIBC Wood Gundy (39.64).
