The 1998 Bank Atlas was compiled in conjunction with Fitch IBCA. All information was supplied by Fitch IBCA from commercial banks' annual reports and financial statements for the years 1996 and 1997. Where possible, figures are presented in consolidated form. Banks owned by other financial institutions are not listed separately as they are consolidated in the parent's figures.
Criteria for inclusion:
G10 countries: minimum shareholders' equity $1 billion (maximum 50 banks per country)
OECD countries outside G10: minimum shareholders' equity $300 million
Other countries: minimum shareholders' equity $200 million, except where information is only available on a...
